I purchased this small tiller this spring after having removed the sod on my new 16x9 garden and flower beds. My intention is to use this to dig down another few inches into the soil and also mix in composted manure for me. It has not disappointed me yet in my intended tasks. Out of the box it was assembled with the handle up in a few seconds. I followed the directions for starting and she started with relative ease being a new small engine. A few minor flameouts later and she was idling perfectly. Total time from box to idling well at half choke by itself was 10 minutes. It takes some time to warm this up all the way to turn the choke off. It was about 55F out and I had to leave it at half choke for 10 minutes or so while working with it. It ran fine at half choke, just minus some speed at the tines. After it got nice and hot I flipped the choke off and she really gained pep as expected. It digs nice and deep into mildly packed soil and mixed in heavy rain-soaked composted manure easily. About 20-25 minutes to do the garden was all it took. My tip is to pull this machine backward slowly, don't try to walk it forward or it rides up and out of the dirt. Go backwards at 3/4 or more throttle and it digs right in. I didn't think this was any louder than any other two stroke. The exhaust does not blow in your face, it comes out towards your shins. The engine fan blows hot air upwards, and that is what I think people are calling exhaust. If it annoys you, stop leaning so far over the engine I guess. I tried it on a patch of non broken grass along the edge of the new garden and it chewed it up, but in untouched grass, you'd need to really move slow and work hard to get this to bust dry sod well. I don't think this machine is meant for that. For maintaining and mixing existing gardens and beds of normal homeowner size, I got what I paid for. Pretty happy. If I was allowed to post pictures, I'd show the work it did to prove my comments.

Don't expect this little guy to turn over hard crusted soil like your grandfather's John Deere tractor. (That said, as I only needed a couple of inches of break-up, I was able to dig through some rather chomped down limestone crust from an old driveway bed, which broke it up enough that I was finally able to shovel it off down to the dirt. Sweet...) Expect to have to work around things at varying angles, and maybe pulling it backwards rather than always going forward like a lawn mower. Expect it to go down only a few inches -- Plenty good for most flowerbeds, future lawns and typical veggie garden. No, you won't go down a foot for your tulips that need to be 6-9 inches below. Expect to mess around with mixing oil and gasoline (it is a 2 cycle engine, unlike your lawn mower). Expect to have arms that are still buzzing for a half-hour after the project is done. (And, wear your goggles, hard shoes and gloves please!) If you have the right expectations, you'll be happy with this.

This is a wonderful tiller for small jobs in your garden. It is best to use a larger tiller first if you are breaking up new ground !!! This tiller is not ment to be used under this type of soil condition. EZ to start, and maintain. My wife can use it with ease. A very good tiller for the money.

Hi- I'm not sure what issues the others have had with this machine, but it's awesome. I've been using the one I bought new for about 3 years now at my home and honestly it's been worked hard and a little abused... but it works as well as brand new. I use it to clear raw land by helping dig out roots, to help grade soil, to make new garden space, etc. My neighbor has seen the results & asked me where I got it. The only negative I can see is the lack of available attachments- I'd like to see an aerator, edger & dethatching attachment for it.

My garden plot has a lot of clay soil and mixing in compost with a shovel was hard work and didn't do a very good job. So when I saw this cultivator for less than $200 I decided to give it a try. It started up just fine following the instructions. As others have said, the pull cord does not pull smoothly and feels like something catches as you pull. It's also awkward to start--pulling with your left hand, holding the throttle with your right hand and your foot on the wheel to keep it from moving.It worked great on my garden that had been cultivated before by hand. It mixed in compost and broke up the clay soil with ease. Then I tried it on an area that had not ever been cultivated before and it surprisingly broke up the soil no problem. I was expecting it to bounce on top of the hard ground but it dug right in. I must admit, the ground had been soaked with water earlier that day so I'm sure that helped.It works best moving backwards rather than going forward. That's the only way I could get it to dig in more than a few inches.My biggest gripe is with the pins that hold the tines in place. One of them came off at some point while using it and I never did find the pin. That is a major design flaw in my opinion.For a small, inexpensive cultivator it did a pretty good job.

It starts. It spins. It gets the job done. It is the cheapest model you can find. That is about it. Nothing special. Pros: If you have something stuck in the wheels, the clutch engages. So, it will not force the engine to stall. It is not heavy either. You can fold the handle in half to save space. Cons: It starts easily if you follow the instruction. But it is very difficult to pull the rope. It is not smooth at all. It feels like there is something stuck inside the pulley all the time. Every time I try hard to pull the rope, I feel like I am going to break the thing. Another thing is that this engine is very very noisy. I can compare this with my lawn mower and string trimmer. My lawn mower is not that noisy at all. My string trimmer is kinda noisy. This cultivator is extremely noisy! You can lose your hearing with this engine. My neighbor actually came over and got mad. So, be prepare if you are going to use it all weekend.

I have had this machine for over 3 years and it is great for the job it is meant to do. This is NOT a roto-tiller, it is a cultivator and only designed to break up already loose soil. I have used it every year for my vegetable and flower gardens and it work great. It is a bit noisey, but if proper gas & oil mix is used it will start great and run very well.
