I bought this mower about 5 years ago. A single woman, I never paid attention to oil changes or maintenance schedules. Just a week ago, I though I needed a new machine when the cord got stuck and would not recoil. It motivated me to learn to do my own maintenance on the mower. A clean, new air filter, a freshly sharpened blade and a new spark plug later with a healthy oil change proved to me how resilient this little machine is, and how sturdy it is. With its new parts and a good clean up, the little thing started working like new. If it can endure my abuse, believe me, it is a good product! I mow an area of about 1/8 acre. Very, very happy with my machine that is still faithful to my yard.

This lawn mower is really light weight and this is important to me. On these hot days of summer I must cut around the sides of my house where the riding lawn mower won't go, this mower makes the chore easy. I had another more expensive heavy-duty lawn mower, but it was so hard to push that I am selling it.

This mower should be in one of those "set it and forget it" infomertials. Before purchasing this mower you should understand its limitations. It has no throttle control, the handle isn't adjustable, and the wheels have to be completely removed to adjust the height. It runs at a fixed speed which is more than adequate. The only way to shut it down is to release the brake handle. If you're much taller than 6 feet the handle may be too low to comfortably push it. I set the wheels in the middle position and don't intend on ever adjusting them again. If you have a need to adjust the wheels or handle on your mower, think twice before you buy this one. Assembly was a straightforward 45 minute affair. Tools required were a set of sockets and a pair of RoboGrip pliers. A 20oz bottle of oil is included. Pour in the entire bottle and the engine will be filled to the correct level. It started on the 2nd pull. The 3.5 horsepower engine had plenty of power to mow my 3-5" grass that was on the damp side. The deck is made of steel rather than plastic or aluminum so its unlikely to crack. The product description is erroneous. This mower is strictly side discharge. It has no mechanism to switch to mulching. I brought this to Amazon's attention and they did offer to take the mower back at their expense. I'm happy enough with the mower to keep it. It does actually have a mulching blade so it doesn't produce as many clippings as expected. I'd say about half of it gets mulched.

Review by Brian Gustin : It is NOT a 3-in-1 despite description

This mower is the bare bones basic unit from MTD - the "loss leader" starter mower. This is not a 3-in-1 and has no mulcher or bagger capability. It has a single side discharge shield that bolts directly to the deck, and no flippable flap or anything. However, we purchased as a pair (Our distributor was out of stock, and these were priced at slightly over what our cost would have been) for re-sale (we are an authorized dealer), but we already knew exactly what we were getting. However the description is highly misleading, and needs to be corrected as of this writing. It is not convertible to mulch nor bag. Also caveat emptor on purchase by this method - Shipping leaves a lot to be desired, as the factory packaging of the unit was never designed nor intended for single unit "B2C" (Business to Consumer) shipping. They are packaged designed to be shipped truck freight on pallets, so when they are shipped by UPS or FedEx, there is great risk of damage, scratches, and broken and/or missing parts. For the savings on a unit once you have paid the shipping charges, you are likely better served to purchase from your local power equipment dealership, where possible.-(Buy local anyway, and keep your money in your local economy!) Just be aware that the unit may not arrive in perfect condition (we had to clean and re-paint the handles on both units due to scuffing and scratches, and got lucky on one where a paint scratch was able to be fixed with scratch repair pen (as seen on TV), and placed a dealer label over it in the usual spot). We also had a customer that purchased a mower this way as well, (not this exact unit- it was a different manufacturer) and it arrived with 3 of 4 wheels broken from having worked their way underneath the deck.. so just be aware of the risks. Beyond that, this is a great buy for the price, and we were able to fill an order when our distributor ran out of stock, the machine itself is quality constructed, and when taken properly care of, can last for 20 years or more, as can most any other MTD manufactured equipment powered by Briggs & Stratton. (Mo-Deck spray helps a ton by making it so much easier to clean grass off the deck)

Good mower for the price. It is noisy and a little heavy but does the job. Height adjustment is manual but if you set it low enough then you should be good to go. This mower is mainly for people that don't have good grass and uneven back yards. You probably want a better mower if you have good grass. The lawn mower is sturdy and I dont have any complains against it. I would recommend this mower at this price.

I bought this mover because it weight only 51 pounds. This lawn mower is really light weight and this is important to me. The mover arrive safely by UPS. The first start was fast. I use it for one hour and the mover cut the grass very ease. I recomended for person to looking for a light weight mover without other features like back bag,etc.

I've had this machine since 1998 and it starts first pull every stinking year. I store it under the spruce trees in the winter. Gets plenty of use all summer. Replaced a wheel bolt, and repaired where the cable hooks into the throttle/on/off handle just this year.Other than that, it gets very little maintenance and still performs ridiculously well.I've never even replaced the spark plug..yikes... It looks worn, but the darn thing always works! No special care at all. I love this..would buy another, if and when I need to.
